It was originally published in 1851 in London, as President Snow says, “to my familiar friends, as a brief record of my mission.”

President Snow’s mission was the first he was called on after he became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve. The focus of the mission was in the Piedmont region of Italy, close to the border of Monaco and Switzerland, and he later spent time in Switzerland.

The mission in Italy was primarily among the Waldensians, an ancient sect of Christians who inhabited three valleys in the Italian Alps known as the Piedmont Valleys. (Waldensianism predates the Reformation by several hundred years and is completely separate from Catholicism.) Snow and his companions Joseph Toronto, Thomas Stenhouse, and Jabez Woodard initially had very little success in converting the Waldensians to Mormonism. However, after healing a three-year-old boy named Joseph Gay, they began to find converts. In the end, more than 150 Waldensians converted to Mormonism, and 70 eventually emigrated to Utah.

This is a stirring record of a difficult mission, but one filled with faith and miracles. In 2013 as we study the teachings of Lorenzo Snow through the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Lorenzo Snow, I hope this book will make an important addition to the things we can learn from this powerful servant of God.
